Inspiring Women 5

Emily Coxhead and The Happy Newspaper

Emily Coxhead is a self-described fluffy-haired, smiley kinda thing but also a designer, illustrator and happy thing maker. She provides inspiring reminders that small, wonderful things are happening every single day. That we all have the power to spread joy, to bring light to our little corners of the world and to the lives of those around us.

I’m sure we can all agree that reading and watching the news is nothing but doom and gloom these days! Emily noticed the effect the news was having on her when she was going through a difficult time herself and decided to do something about it. With the help of an incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign, The Happy Newspaper was born!

It’s sole purpose is to share and celebrate the positive and uplifting stories that are often overlooked. The quarterly newspaper highlights the everyday heroes, the people who don’t expect to be praised for what they do, those who have turned horrific events into a time to be proud of humanity  and those who make us believe this world has the potential to be better.

If you need someone to add a little bit of sunshine into your stressful day, then we highly recommend giving this gal a follow! And let’s all try to be a little bit kinder to each other and make the world a better place. If you have the power to make someone happy, do it! The world needs more of that.

Welcome lovely new followers, Hii! It’s @emilycoxhead here, founder of #thehappynews 💛🌻 a real, 32 page newspaper which is posted worldwide quarterly, full of only positive news. Emily illustrates and designs the whole thing and posts each newspaper out by hand from a very tiny office… the content is researched/written by a tiny but wonderful team. Emily also designs and illustrates a pretty huge range of greeting cards, her book has just been published and she’s also designed a few hundred products as well as running several social media accounts and trying to still be a tiny bit human! Please bear with us (me) whilst I figure out how The Happy News expands over the next few months and whilst we fix all the little fiddly things that aren’t quite right (like the website not telling you when you’ll receive your first newspaper after you’ve subscribed!) In the meantime Emily’s doing her absolute best as a one-woman-band and we hope that very soon most things will be running smoothly on the site and before we know it issue 9 will be turning up in people’s letterboxes eek (April!) psst… you can still subscribe for this issue 💌✨

UN Women and HeForShe

We can’t deny, all of us here at make it pop were huge Harry Potter fans growing up! To be fair, which millennial wasn’t. I’m sure we’re all secretly thinking that our Hogwarts acceptance letter got lost in the post, no? Just us then ? Ok, let’s move on…

Seeing little Hermione all grown up and taking on the world one kickass speech at a time is undoubtedly inspiring. She brought the HeForShe movement to the forefront of media and political attention.

Founded by UN Women in 2014, HeForShe is dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. They are inviting people around the world to stand together to create a bold, visible force for gender equality. The world is at a turning point. People everywhere understand and support the idea of gender equality. They know it’s not just a women’s issue, it’s a human rights issue. And when these powerful voices are heard, they will change the world. HeForShe recognise the time for that change is now.

Everyone has a say. Everyone has a role. Every unique contribution is essential to achieving gender equality. Break the silence with a simple question: Are you #HeForShe?

If you do nothing else with you day then please go ask yourself this, “If not me, who? If not now, when?”

Tuesday Bassen and her fight for recognition

As designers and creatives I’m sure we all have a story about how our work or ideas were stolen. It sucks. It sucks big time! When you’ve worked so hard and created something epic but someone else gets the credit, and the money.

For Tuesday Bassen, enough was enough! She simply had to bite back, should louder than the hughstreet and stand her ground!

In 2016, Zara ripped off a large number of Tuesday’s designs, as well as a plethora of other artists, illustrators and designers. Was any credit or acknowledgement given? Was it hell! Yet when confronted they belittled and bullied the designers. Zara essentially stated that Tuesday was “not a big enough name” for her allegations to hold any water. F U Zara!

Thankfully though, Tuesday and all the other creatives are strong, kickass people! They launched social media campaigns, highlighting just how ugly and disgusting these high-street giants can be and lawsuits ensued.

So next time you head into your favourite high-street retailer falling in love with that slogan t-shirt, just think to yourself, did this company really design that? And if you think you’ve seen a design or illustration before, don’t buy it! Find the original artist, give them you’re money. Fight for the little people! *Does Breakfast Club fist pump at desk*

Brit + Co and Be the Change

Brit + Co is a media company that has been inspiring, educating and entertaining real women with a creative spirit since 2011. They have become one of the largest digital media companies for women, reaching an engaged community of over 175 million online and across platform. Now thats digital company goals right there!

In honour of International Women’s Day, they established the Be the Change campaign. It is focused on creating real life projects to make the world better. They have four main initiatives, these being; ‘make change with nonprofits’, ’empower women candidates’, ‘get involved in the refugee crisis’ and ‘lighten your carbon footprint’. Each initiative details how these areas can change the world, how you can be involved and how women are leading the changes our world very much needs to see.

We think the Be the Change campaign is as inspiring as the women who created it and are responding to it. The initiative ask, “So what do you want to start changing?” and this feels key to where we are all in the world right now. Things are teetering on the edge globally, nationally and personally for many of us, but nothing can change unless we become the change we want to see in the world and tackle it head on!

In order to compete and make their voices heard in an increasingly noisy world, it's critical that young women with passion and expertise get involved. Jason Chmura.

Feeling inspired?

We honestly could have wrote about endless inspiring women in this post. The changes the world is seeing as of late is incredible for female empowerment. We all have a role to play, and a woman’s role is very much one of changing the world. Hopefully you’re feeling a little more inspired and ready to face the world after reading this post! Be sure to follow all these incredible women and more on social media (and make it pop too!)
